Having previously auctioned off two other Trans Ams and about to do so again this Saturday for the third time, you can’t help but wonder just how many of the classic American muscle cars Burt Reynolds actually owns!

We imagine he’s got a garage full of the second generation cars and we don’t blame him if he has – he was the Bandit, and oh – they’re seriously cool. But Bandit mobile number three isn’t like the others the movie legend has flogged in the past. This one has a 8.2-litre V8 under that shaker hood.

You’ll be able to bid on the Firebird today when it crosses the block at the Barrett-Jackson auction at Scottsdale, Arizona.

Built by Nebraska company Restore A Muscle Car, the T/A started life as a Formula, but the original 4.9-litre V8 was ditched for a fuel-injected 8.2-litre V8 from Butler Performance making 600 horsepower and mated to a Tremec five-speed manual.

Some of the goodies this Bird gets is a Hurst line-lock feature for some seriously smoky burnouts, QA1 coil-over suspension, 18in wheels and a stunning black paint job with a black Phoenix on the bonnet. And if that isn’t enough, it’s been signed by Burt too.

Fans of Smokey and the Bandit – which starred Reynolds, Sally Field and the late Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed – will no doubt hope they’ll make the successful bid on the no reserve car and get to be the Bandit.

Let’s just hope they don’t outrun the law or jump any broken bridges like the mustachioed silver screen icon did in the 1977 smash hit…
