CrossFit is a very basic fitness program designed with functional exercises. It’s an old school training method which includes weightlifting, gymnastics and mono-structural exercises such as running and biking.
Crossfit is about preparing your body and mind capable of handling different tasks that life throws at you. CrossFit does not ask for a certain fitness level. Being a CrossFit coach myself, I hear it all the time that people want to start running or going to a gym before even thinking of joining CrossFit.
That’s not really the case. I don’t understand why you need to get in shape to get in shape. Sounds stupid, right? Here’s why this sport is for everyone.
1) CrossFit Program Is Based On functional Exercises
CrossFit workouts utilize only functional movements. Hence, the program focuses a lot on jumping, squatting, running, lifting, pushing and pulling weights. The human body is built for these movements. You never know when you may have to run to chase a bus or lift a heavy suitcase. It makes you good at everyday activities.
2) CrossFit Exercises Can Be Modified To Fit A Person’s Goal
CrossFit workouts are completely scalable to benefit anyone at any fitness level. From a grandparent, to a professional athlete, everybody can have a program designed for them. The weights, complexity, intensity are adjusted to suit everyone’s capabilities. CrossFit members usually range from 16 to 70—from collegiate athletes to those that haven’t trained in 20 years. CrossFit coaches are trained to coach anyone and everyone and can also handle athletes with disabilities and injuries to a good extent.
3) CrossFit Works Towards Building A Community That Is Very Supportive
Everyone is treated equally in a CrossFit box (CrossFit facilities are called a “box”). Whether you are an experienced athlete or a rookie, you are welcome. Everyone is pushed by each other to do their best. Since everybody feels the same pain, it makes up for a very close knitted community which you will not find in most traditional gyms. It is the only place where the person finishing the last is cheered the most. You can never go wrong with such motivation.
4) The Class Sizes Are Small And Leads To Semi Personal Training
Every CrossFit facility has at least one well-trained coach assigned to help each member in small sized classes. This facilitates one to one interaction with the coach and I believe it is important to have someone looking at your form irrespective of your fitness level.
5) There’s A Different Workout Everyday
It is very important for everyone to enjoy their workouts to be able to do it for a long time to see results. CrossFit offers different workouts every day called the “WOD” (workout of the day). This consistent change keeps the motivation going and helps in learning new skills almost every day. And of course, you will never want to skip a day if you are getting to learn something new.
6) CrossFit Workouts Are Just As Much Mental As They Are Physical
Doesn’t matter what level of fitness you are at, CrossFit workouts will always challenge you, mentally as well as physically. The coaches and the fellow members in the class always push each other to their limits. This in itself makes for a rigorous mental workout and our athletes achieve what they thought they never would. The “never quit” attitude always sticks with our athletes.
To summarize, who is CrossFit for? CrossFit is for anyone who wants serious long lasting results in terms of fitness. It is for you if you want a healthy old age. It is for you if you want to improve at a sport. It is for you if you want to lose weight. It is for you if you want to get strong. In short, CrossFit is for everyone.
