France D2566 — Col de Turini
It was nice of Mercedes-AMG to pleasantly surprise us with a capable and athletic 2016 SLC 43 roadster, even if it’s now a downsized one packing a 362bhp 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo. It was even nicer of Mercedes-AMG to let us loose in one up and down the infamous Col de Turini rally stage in the hills above Monte Carlo.
Italy SS120 — Targa Florio
When Maserati invites you to Sicily to test drive a facelifted new car you say yes, because the test location is in the hills around the Sicilian town of Cerda, the old start-finish point and pit area (still preserved) of the legendary Targa Florio race held from 1906 to 1977.
Spain TF21 — Pico del Teide
Pico del Teide is a 3,718-metre-tall peak with its summit the highest point above sea level in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s on the Spanish island of Tenerife, and it’s also an active volcano. We drove a McLaren 570GT up a mesmerizing road to the top and down again and we’re still recovering from altitude sickness.
Montenegro P1 — Kotor
Sixteen hairpins in less than eight kays and a 600m elevation drop, ow, dizzy… At times, trying to drive around Montenegro was just an exercise in survival, with our Jaguar F-Pace tester barely squeezing through some local stone-walled roads.
Italy SR62 — Poggio di Berceto
Back in the day brave men raced wild machines up this gravel road from Parma to Poggio di Berceto, and you may have heard of one Enzo Ferrari who made his name there with his debut win in a four-cylinder MCN. Luckily for us and the Maserati Levante’s paintwork, the road’s paved nowadays.
